Meeting Minutes June 6, 2017
Present: Katya Nieburg Wheeler, Susan McCardle, Jody Huber (by phone), Mrs. Viscuso, Erin Wells, Rebecca Wright, Donna McClellan, Ann Schlitz, Amy Spaziani
4:00 Welcome and call to order
Katya Wheeler motioned to start the meeting
4:00 Principal’s Report (School & District Meeting)
Principal McCardle thanked the PTO for supporting the school and for their thoughtfulness. The school is thankful for having a strong PTO. Great to have the parental support in addition to teachers and students. Discussed the great supportive culture between the three groups.
4:05 School Comprehensive Plan
Handout- New Garden is a Title 1 school so we get federal funds to help every student be successful. We are a school-wide title 1 school so we can use funds in any way to support students. Every school that receives funds has to have title 1 plan and now school comprehensive plan. Team was assembled from different departments who developed a school action plan.
Overall goal: Ensure that there is a system in place for effective instructional practice and differentiated instruction
-Benchmark data in September and then identify who needs support (either enrichment or assistance)
-Once a month, the teachers will meet as a professional learning community to discuss progress toward goals
-This is already happening but this provides a comprehensive plan to follow
4:20 Treasurer Report & Outstanding items to close out the Year
Brought in over 8,600 more than expected
Budget requests for next year? Because we have so much, maybe we can do something bigger for the school. Possibility of kids coming up with ideas.
4:25 Book Nook Project /Proposal (presentation by Nina Goel)
For silver award girl scout project- develop a book nook where people can donate books and others can borrow them for free. Placement somewhere near the front of school for easy access during drop off or pick-up. Mrs. Pizzini might also have books that can be donated.
We can donate resources, but not money due to the restrictions surrounding the girl scout award. Amy can put information about it on all of our sites.

Circulate final version and then Kathy can help distribute to teachers
For parents- make the questions as specific as possible
4:40 Garden Club Update & Earth Day
Some parents have signed up for garden club
They will be selecting times and dates to come in and tend the garden over the summer
Susan McCardle will continue to let PTO know how it’s going
4:43 2017-2018 Assemblies Proposal Review
Laurie Kronenberg has spreadsheets planned for the next two years
Maybe we should consider doing an extra one since we have extra money
4:45 Recent Events Review
Bus Driver Appreciation May 3- good reports back from bus drivers. Was week before teacher appreciation week, which seemed to be easier on parents.
Open House May 3 pm- Everything went well with potluck dinner
Choral Concert May 11, 7pm
Teacher Appreciation Week May 8-12
Assembly – Mariachi Band May 23
Instrumental Concert
Writer’s Day May 22
June 1 @ 6pm NG Theater Production

Buddy Bench
4:55 Ideas discussed this year – ownership:
We are not going to do the Buddy Run 5k
Bancroft does a run during the day and gets sponsorships for how much they run. Will check with Bancroft to see what the logistics are of the idea.
International Day- in evening, stations for different cultural items, music, dress-up in traditional clothing. October is a potential date
Best Demonstrated Practices among PTOs – Katya Wheeler will send out a couple of dates to meet with other PTOs at the Market.
All future events are listed on agenda
December- talked about a craft/card night where kids can make things to give their parents
We have date for basketball game next year- at high school- free admission
5:00 Planning for 2017-18
Have volunteers for all of the major items
